the essentials in brief

  • Two HSG professors caused a sensation with statements regarding female students.
  • The men are more interested – the women are “completely lost”.
  • Now the professors have commented on their statements.

Due to Corona, many people have recently had to work or study from home in the so-called home office – this also includes video calls. These calls are mostly professional, but can sometimes result in unwanted faux pas.

Have you already experienced a faux pas during a video call?

This is exactly what happened to two professors at the HSG. After a methodology lecture on the video call, the two discussed the previous lesson. The professors were unconsciously still in the public video call, which was then put online.

women less interested

In their conversation, they talk regarding the fact that men are more interested in teaching, as reported by the “St.Galler Tagblatt”. One replied: “Yes, the women are completely lost.” This statement worries many female students now for a furore.

It’s a scandal that women would talk regarding other women like that, an affected master’s student told the newspaper. One was hoping for support from the female part of the teaching staff instead of criticism that was put in a drawer, explains another.

The two professors commented to the “St.Galler Tagblatt”: “That female students do better on average in written work than their male colleagues, but verbally they do better in larger events Conspicuously less participation is a well-known phenomenon.» The comment was “an expression of shared frustration” and “in no way meant to be derogatory or hurtful”.

Rather, one wants to develop positively with the questions. A professor says: “We are very concerned regarding this question precisely because we want to contribute to making women more visible.”
