The WHO assured that the end of the pandemic “is not near”

The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, denied the theory that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus mitigates the disease and warned that the pandemic “is not near its end”.

“The pandemic is not near its end”, declared the Eritrean to journalists at the agency’s headquarters in the Swiss city of Geneva (Switzerland), according to the Singaporean newspaper Lianhe Zaobao.

The Omicron variant, which emerged in South Africa, is much more contagious than others, having spread rapidly since it was first detected in the African country last November.

“Omicron may be less serious, on average, but the description that it is a harmless disease is misleading”, stressed this week the head of the WHO.

“Make no mistake: Omicron is causing hospitalizations and deaths, and even less severe cases are overwhelming health care facilities”, he concluded.
