A few days ago the voting of the “Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2022” from a wide variety of categories. However, the one that always attracts the most attention is the “Anime of the Year Nominees” and this time was no exception, but rather in a negative way.
The nominees for anime of the year according to Crunchyroll’s selection are Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season – Part 1, Odd Taxi, Sonny Boy, Ousama Ranking (Ranking of Kings), Jujutsu Kaisen Y 86: Eighty-Six. This selection generated the displeasure of the fans, especially due to the absence of immensely popular projects such as Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu), Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song The Fumetsu no Anata e (To Your Eternity). In networks you can read comments like the following:
- «The Crunchyroll Anime Awards always suck every year. You should know by now».
- «Coming from a company with piracy backgrounds, low pay for translators, and awful interface, I didn’t have high expectations anyway.».
- [Respondiendo arriba] «Don’t forget when they drastically reduced the video quality to save a few bucks; or when basic security practices were not followed, leading to a hack that gave users viruses; or when they fired much of the engineering and entire QA department, shady outsourcing to Moldova, and abandoning Crunchyroll development in favor of VRV, despite serious problems like staying in Flash player forever».
- «They love to invest in glitzy events like these instead of their own platform».
- «They already ignored Vinland Saga in a selection in the past. From there I will never stop thinking that those prizes are shit».
- «I still remember that in response to the fact that Yuri On Ice!! took several awards on one occasion and caused controversy, fans of that series began calling fans of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure “homophobic”».
- «I can’t wait to see Jujutsu Kaisen at next year’s awards. These bastards got him into two consecutive selections!».
- «The real disappointment is that Heike Monogatari wasn’t selected for shit».
- «Nowadays literally nobody cares regarding the Crunchyroll Awards. They have always been shit from the beginning and they are just a very long commercial to promote the series that Crunchyroll has in its catalog».
- «I find it ridiculous how they put “Jujutsu Kaisen Part 2” among the nominees. Does MAPPA know regarding this? Jujutsu Kaisen never had two parts like Re:Zero Season 2 did. But what did we expect, Crunchyroll has to promote its series at any cost».
- «Having Eren Jeager nominated for both best lead and best antagonist is stupid of him. The Crunchyroll Awards stopped being serious years ago».
- «It is the people who vote in those categories. They pick their favorites and that’s how we get these results. I don’t think anyone is ever happy with awards from any media outlet as there is a lot of subjectivity (which is what makes it fun because there are shows for everyone). I assure you that Kadokawa is not losing sleep over all the money that Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is raising».
own Crunchyroll issued a press release attempting to do “damage control” regarding their selection, explaining the criteria that the series had to meet to be considered in the selection of nominees for “Anime of the Year 2021“: «Exclusion means nothing to the quality of these series. Rather, any nominated series must pass all of the following rules to be rated: (1) must be animation, (2) The primary production of the title must have taken place in Japan, (3) Have been broadcast online or on television in Japan, at least in part, between January and November 2021, and (4) At least one episode must have received initial and legal distribution in the United States of America in 2021». This explains the absence of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean (premiered in december), Kimetsu no Yaiba: Yuukaku-hen (premiered in december) Y Aggretsuko Season 4 (premiered in december).
