Inflation in the euro zone should stabilize and gradually decline during 2022. This is what Christine Lagarde said in an interview with our colleagues from France Inter. The boss of the European Central Bank wants to be optimistic despite a record inflation rate of 5% in the euro zone, a level confirmed by Eurostat, while a year ago the inflation rate was less than 0.3% .
For several months, Europeans have been suffering the effects of inflation. Rising energy prices are the main cause, says Christine Lagarde, head of the European Central Bank (ECB).

However, the situation should improve: We consider that, during the year 2022, it will stabilize and gradually decrease during the year. If I told you a number today, I would say 3.2% for the whole year ».
Disorganized reaction of central banks
Faced with a contrasting situation, central banks are reacting in dispersed order:« We are all in very different situations. The United States has much higher inflation, you said. We have much lower inflation. Interest rates are at different rates: the United States is very slightly positive, we are negative. The recovery is more advanced in the United States than in Europe ».
If in Europe, the rules governing the public debt of the Member States have been suspended until 2023, they will have to be reformed in the future: “ They will certainly not be the same rules. The 3% and 60% are inscribed in texts which would have to be modified for them to disappear. In 2023, we would not be there ».
Currently, a state in the European Union can only go into debt up to 60% of its national wealth.
