We do not believe that the former president was involved in the riots

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Mukhtar Toloberdi, indicated that he does not believe that former President Nursultan Nazarbayev and his relatives were involved in the turmoil in the country. In an interview with Euractiv, he confirmed that only the investigation will resolve this issue.

When asked if Nazarbayev or any members of his family were involved in the riots, Tilobardi said he did not believe that, but the investigation would eventually reveal the truth.

Mass protests began in Kazakhstan in the early days of 2022, and started from the west of the country following the price of liquefied gas was increased. Then the protests spread to other cities, including Alma-Ata, the ancient capital and largest city in the republic: there began riots that were accompanied by looting, attacks on state institutions, the seizure of weapons and the spread of thefts.
