Around 10 years have passed since the right-wing extremist attacks in Oslo and on the island of Utøya. Now, in Norway, the perpetrator’s application for early release is being negotiated. Telemark District Court is considering whether convicted mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik can be released on parole following the minimum term of his sentence has expired. Far-right terrorist Breivik killed 77 people in July 2011. The 42-year-old received the maximum sentence of 21 years in preventive detention, with a minimum period of ten years. However, unlike a normal prison sentence, the period of detention can be extended every five years. It is therefore unclear when the right-wing extremist will be allowed to leave the prison in Skien and if ever once more. The trial also takes place in the prison where Breivik is kept separate from his fellow inmates. Prosecutors assume that Breivik might once more commit serious crimes outside of prison. This would continue to be a danger to society. The public prosecutor’s office is therefore doing everything in its power to ensure that Breivik remains in custody.
