after the eruption of Christiane Taubira, an attempt at rapprochement between socialists and ecologists

Wednesday January 12, Julien Bayou called Olivier Faure. A phone call anything but innocuous between the bosses of Europe Ecology-The Greens (EELV) and the Socialist Party (PS). Discussions had been strained for some time between the two political leaders. In any case, an official dialogue had been discouraged since the end of 2021 by, jointly, Yannick Jadot and Anne Hidalgo, who above all did not want to give the impression that a gathering was imaginable between two candidates determined to walk to the end of the presidential election.

On the phone, Julien Bayou took news of his counterpart and inquired regarding his relations, not always fluid, with the socialist candidate. Then the ecologist tried to convince his interlocutor that to get out of the quagmire and the current crumbling on the left, there remained still and always a prospect of union. If and only if Anne Hidalgo, at the worst in the voting intentions, made the wise decision to withdraw. Finally, the two men quickly discussed a possible agreement for the legislative elections.

On this last point, the national secretary of EELV firmly reaffirmed his position: “If Anne Hidalgo goes to the end, there will be no agreements in the legislative elections”, he confirmed to World. To the chagrin of the PS, which still hopes for an alliance, even limited to around a hundred constituencies. Nothing seems quite definitive.

On the presidential question, on the other hand, Olivier Faure received Julien Bayou’s proposal quite coldly, because the socialist no longer has the political means – if only he had had the idea – to disconnect the mayor of Paris to settle down behind Yannick Jadot. Even if this phone call can be seen as another attempt at common sense, voters on the left who call for unity should not rejoice too quickly. The solution is not found to date, resistance is still strong on both sides.

Taubira facing the challenge of 500 signatures

Especially since for several weeks, nothing has been easy between the two parties. To hope for a reconciliation, there are a lot of broken dishes to slip under the rug. Especially since Anne Hidalgo weighs the ” responsibility ” of the failure of the rally on the environmental candidate, who himself is in despair or laughs, it varies according to his mood, of the procrastination of the mayor of Paris: she brushed aside the idea of any primary then called everyone to submit to it, before finally denying it.
