Last week’s meetings between Americans and Russians in Geneva, then within the framework of the Russia-NATO Council, and finally within that ofOSCE, led to the rejection of two of the Kremlin’s three proposals. For the Russian press, however, we cannot yet speak of a failure of the negotiations.
“To speak of deadlock in the Russian-American negotiations is premature”, writes the weekly Expert, following the marathon week of talks between Russia and the West in Geneva, Brussels and Vienna on January 10, 12 and 13.
Certainly, following the“ultimatum” of Moscow demanding the “respect for his vital interests” within a perimeter of “red lines”, and the adoption of a “diplomatic package” Taken as a whole, the escalation of measures, threats and declarations was foreseeable: the interest of the Scandinavian countries in joining NATO, the almost acquired decision to integrate Ukraine and Georgia into the Atlantic Alliance, new sanctions once morest the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, once morest Vladimir Putin and his close collaborators, deployment of missiles in Europe, etc.
For its part, Russia is responding with military exercises, promising to find “technical and military arguments” and evokes the transfer of part of the confrontation to the territory of Latin America, to the “backyard” of the United States.
Most “remaining optimistic is possible”, value the title. The West is finally discussing “substantially problems of Russia” with Moscow, “red lines” of Russia are “recorded in real documents”, and “ignoring them is [désormais] face a military threat”.
