Reconstruction of Syria: Damascus integrates “the silk road”

According to the memorandum signed by Fadi al-Khalil, chairman of the Planning and International Cooperation Commission, and Feng Biao, Chinese Ambassador to Damascus, Syria is joining the initiative which makes it possible to open wide perfectives for cooperation with China and a number of partner countries in several areas, including the exchange of goods, technology, capital, and culture.
The memorandum sets the objectives of future cooperation with partner countries in the initiative and its fields.
In a press briefing, the president of the Planning and International Cooperation Commission, F. al-Khalil, indicated that Syria’s accession to the initiative strengthens cooperation between Syria and China in several areas, including facilitation of trade, reconstruction of infrastructure, electric power and alternative energy.
For his part, the Chinese Ambassador stressed that the signing of the memorandum of understanding consolidates cooperation between the two countries, which contributes to economic reconstruction and social development in Syria, and also strengthens the alignment between the Initiative of the economic belt of the Silk Road and the strategy of orientation towards the East proposed by Syria.
It should also be noted that President Bashar al-Assad had received Rostom Qassimi, Iranian Minister of Roads and Town Planning, head of the Syrian-Iranian Joint Economic Committee, and the accompanying delegation. The talk focused on relations between Syria and Iran, especially in the economic field.
President al-Assad stressed the importance of establishing new projects that realize the strategic interest of the two countries.
The meeting also focused on the expansion of the fields of work in both public and private sectors and the encouragement of joint investments with a view to relaunching bilateral cooperation. R. Qassimi underlined the position of his country which supports the steadfastness of the Syrian people in the face of the terrorist war that they are facing and their concern to expand bilateral cooperation in all fields.
