Gérald Darmanin announces investigations for vandalism in two churches

Gérald Darmanin decided to take in hand the file of the desecration of the churches of Romainville and Bondy during the night from Sunday to Monday. The minister announced Wednesday evening the opening of two investigations to find the authors of these acts of vandalism committed in these churches of Seine-Saint-Denis.

In a tweet, he also gave his “support to the Catholics of our country”, and called “these acts unacceptable”. Gérald Darmanin will also visit this Thursday morning on site: at the Saint-Pierre church in Bondy and at the Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois church in Romainville.

Theft and damage

These damages and thefts were the subject of two press releases from the diocese of Saint-Denis-en-France, which lodged a complaint. At the opening of the Bondy church on Monday morning, a volunteer “immediately noticed that the trunk of the church had been sawn with a grinder to steal the money”. The diocese also detailed the various damages: “a broken stained-glass window, the tabernacle desecrated, fractured and emptied of its contents, the sacristy with a broken door and where another liturgical object was stolen, as well as a laptop”.

In Romainville, “a trunk was torn, the tabernacle was fractured, the sound equipment, stolen, and the cabinets of the sacristy, stripped of several sacred vessels”, according to the diocese.
