Syro-Malabar Synod urges people not to go ahead with survey and land acquisition without trusting the people

Syro Malabar Church Synod urges people not to go ahead with the survey and land acquisition process of the Silver Line project without trusting the people. Concerns in the community should be taken seriously. The Synod also demanded that a detailed plan document be published.

The Synod states that the House’s views on this matter are fully upheld by the House in view of the State Government’s development plans. The economic, social and environmental dimensions of the project should be subjected to expert study. The plight of ordinary people who are losing their land, shelter and livelihood for the project should be taken into consideration most sympathetically. The Synod also opined that the government should not proceed with the survey-land acquisition process unless it has the confidence of the people in the project area.

An approach should be taken that gives priority to the upliftment of the common man and the poor in the formulation of development plans, resource allocation and prioritization. A balance must be struck between development and environmental protection. There must be people-friendly decisions, both in terms of development and environmental protection.

On the one hand, when stringent conditions are imposed on the common man, including construction restrictions on migrant areas and the designation of eco-sensitive areas, on the other hand, mega projects like K Rail, which are supposed to change even the landscape of Kerala, are becoming the policy of governments. The Synod also called on governments to go ahead with development and environmental protection projects only following listening to the people and considering their views.
