Fish oil for migraine

Eating more fatty fish is beneficial once morest migraine, US researchers have observed. The secret ? The omega-3s they contain have an anti-inflammatory effect, which helps reduce the intensity and frequency of attacks. For four months, 182 volunteers, especially women – more prone to these rifling headaches – ate the healthy meals provided by the researchers. On the menu: fish and chicken, hummus, nuts, fruits and vegetables. Without their knowledge, some were entitled to a diet comprising 1.5 grams of omega-3 per day in the form of fatty fish or fish oil added to food. Others ate a menu rich in soy and corn oils. Result: a 30% to 40% decrease in migraines in the group that ate more fish. However, there is no point in emptying the fishmongers’ stalls. Reducing the amount of soy and corn oils in your diet is just as important, according to the study’s authors. Plentiful in the typical North American diet, these vegetable oils contain omega-6s, which increase inflammation.

Sanitary napkins for all

Every time they sell a sanitary napkin, the maker joni gives one to a woman in need. Combating menstrual insecurity – the lack of access to these kinds of basic commodities – is at the heart of the BC company’s mission. In nearly two years of existence, it has provided more than 100,000 free of charge. Its founders, Linda Biggs and Jayesh Vekariya, have built a business model allowing them to channel their donations through partners such as the United Way. In the country, among adolescent girls and young women under 25, “one in three cannot afford the feminine hygiene products they need,” says Jayesh Vekariya. They manage as best they can, using toilet paper or towels. Or they keep the same protection too long – at the risk of having a toxic shock, if it is a tampon. In addition to poverty, geographic remoteness is another source of inequity. In some villages in Nunavut, the cost of a packet of sanitary napkins is costing transportation to $ 20; it is four times more expensive than in Montreal. Joni therefore ships products purchased online free of charge across the country.

Get up early to beat the blues

The earlier you get up, the less likely you are to suffer from depression. It would suffice to bring the time to go to bed and get out of it by one hour to reduce this risk by 23%, say American researchers. And by two hours ahead of it, the risk drops by 40%! In question: daylight, which generates a cascade of hormonal reactions improving mood. The researchers arrived at these conclusions by consulting an international biobank gathering the genetic profiles and medical information of hundreds of thousands of volunteers. Many genes influence a person’s propensity to be the early bird or groundhog type. However, being a night owl is not a curse, the research team points out. Because genetic background is not the only cause. We can also review certain habits … such as giving up watching an additional episode of his favorite series.
