Young boys’ silent Golden Globes victory | Nachrichten.at

One thing can be learned from the awarding of the 79th Golden Globes, which took place on the night of yesterday: the absence of Hollywood stars attracts as much attention as their presence.

The fact that the association of Hollywood’s international journalists had fallen out of favor dominated the second most important prizes following the Academy Awards and the TV Oscars Emmys – awarded by barely a hundred members. The 2020 accusations of corruption and lack of diversity (no Afro-American member) culminated in the now “executed” punishment: withdrawal of presence. Despite reforms and promises for more diversity and transparency, the glamor gang stuck to the boycott. The house broadcaster NBC refused to broadcast.

Leaving this aside, the jury’s professional work becomes clear: In a silent gala without celebrities at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, big winners emerged (more in the box), led by “The Power of the Dog”, the grandiose one Neo-Western by Jane Campion (including best film drama). Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” was chosen as the best film musical. “Succession” was a success among the series.

All three productions are highly rated favorites of critics and audiences alike. In quieter times, the association of the foreign press would be accused of orienting itself too much towards the opinion of the mainstream. The window was opened wide for the youngsters, who shone alongside long-time residents like Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman or Hans Zimmer (third Golden Globe for the score for “Dune”): Rachel Zegler (best actress “West Side Story”) is only just now 20 and as old as Billie Eilish, who won the Globe with her Bond song “No Time To Die”. Kodi Smit-McPhee is 25 years old. MJ Rodriguez (31) became the first trans woman to win a Globe as a TV lead actress.

The question of which winner actually commented on his Globe on social media was discussed a lot. But there are two downsides that are more spicy: The drama “Belfast” held seven nominations and only won the script award. And the US pay broadcaster HBO, from which the series hype emanated in the noughties, relegated the streaming emperor Netflix (five prizes) from the throne.
