After snowfall in the night, the roads in Switzerland were sometimes very slippery. The police report numerous accidents for the canton of St. Gallen.
Heavy snowfalls have led to various road accidents in the canton of St. Gallen. Since midnight, the police have had to go to 16 traffic accidents. Half of the accidents occurred on motorways.
Most of the accidents were self-accidents in which vehicles came off the lane or hit parts of the road infrastructure, as the St. Gallen canton police wrote in a press release on Monday. In a handful of cases, there were minor collisions between two vehicles, but no one was injured.
A 30-year-old woman was slightly injured in a self-accident on the A13 motorway near Mels shortly following the Sarganserland junction in the direction of St. Margrethen. She had to be brought to the hospital by the ambulance service for control.
Trucks get stuck at the «Bürerstich»
According to the police, there was a major traffic obstruction in the early hours of the morning at the “Bürerstich” near Oberbüren. Because of the snow-covered road, several trucks got stuck on the steeply rising section of the motorway.
The police maneuvered the trucks onto the hard shoulder. The drivers concerned were able to fit the snow chains there and continue their journey.
The national road maintenance gave priority to the affected section of the route so that there were no longer any disruptions for the following traffic.
As a survey of the cantonal police in Zurich and Bern in the early morning showed, the traffic was rolling here. The streets were partly slippery, especially at higher altitudes, it was said. However, no reports of traffic accidents have yet been received. But that might change with more traffic.
During the night there was enough in the lowlands for a little foam #New snow. In slightly elevated locations – such as in St. Gallen (see picture) – a few centimeters came together. Even now (as of 4 a.m.) there are still a few #Snow shower, Be careful on the streets! ⚠️ (ss) pic.twitter.com/8mlqeqbUeV

Choppy weather subsides
The changeable weather gradually subsides. The air pressure increases continuously. From Wednesday, a strong high pressure area with a core over the British Isles will determine the weather in Switzerland. On Thursday, the air pressure in Switzerland is likely to rise to an unusually high 1040 hectopascals.
