Basrawi News Encyclopedia – Books: Rania Muhammad / The head of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Eng. Majed Abu Zahira, stated that the planet Mercury reached, on Friday, its great eastern elongation at an angle of 17 degrees from the sun.
And the evenings, within regarding a week of that night, were the best opportunities to see the planet with the naked eye, which has a brightness of (−0.6) towards the southwestern horizon in the sky of the Arab world.
Abu Zahira said that Mercury began to appear with the sky moving towards darkness, and the planet remained above the horizon for only one hour and 22 minutes, and was in a state of alignment on the dome of the sky for the observer with the planets Saturn and Jupiter, in addition to the moon, adding that Mercury is often called Mercury. : “The Elusive Planet”.
remains absent
He pointed out that we usually see the planets Venus, Mars and Jupiter shining in the sky, while Mercury remains absent, explaining that despite the small size of the planet, it is too bright to be observed with the naked eye, but we often do not see it.
And he added that Mercury’s orbit is internal to the Earth and close enough to the sun that it never gets far from it, as it is observed from our planet, on most nights.
Mercury rises or sets so close to the sun that it is impossible to see except for times near its maximum elongation, the angle between the planet and the sun in the sky.
He also pointed out that there are two types of eastern and western elongations, when Mercury is east of the sun, it is evening eastern elongation, and when it is on the western side of the sun, it is western morning elongation, explaining that the maximum elongation angle for Mercury ranges between 18 degrees and 28 degrees east or west of the sun, and is due The reason for this difference is because Mercury’s orbit around the Sun is not perfectly circular.
