Union, lifeline for the French left?

Part of the foreign press describes a hexagonal left to subscribers absent from the presidential campaign. In this context, she explores the possibility of a union of parties, which remains as hypothetical as ever.

A left “Lost”, “in tatters”, “weakened”, “unruly”, “speechless”, “missing”, “divided”, facing “A historic collapse”… The sad litany of the international press suggests that the vital prognosis of the French left is engaged.

For the New York Times, “The only possible path to victory is unity”. Admittedly, even together, the left-wing candidates only accumulate a quarter of the votes, 20 points less than ten years ago, a score that would not necessarily lead their champion to the duel once morest Emmanuel Macron. But the best chance of achieving this today seems to be the “Flagship project” young left activists: the “popular primary”.

“Last lifeline”

Launched in February 2021, the initiative had met little media coverage until Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris and Socialist Party presidential candidate, unexpectedly supported it in December. Therefore, following having taken more than six months to reach 100,000 signatures, the popular primary tripled its support, becoming “the last lifeline of part of the left * ”French, according to the Barcelona daily The newspaper. According to the latest polls, 70% of left-wing voters would be in favor of a presidential union. A dynamic clearly favored by the growing shadow of Eric Zemmour on the electoral campaign.

For the candidates, supporting this coalition seems less obvious. Arnaud Montebourg, former socialist minister and candidate for La Remontada de France, was in favor, but many headlines in the international press question the credibility of his candidacy knowing that his campaign never took off. The electoral weight of Anne Hidalgo, currently credited with 5% of voting intentions, did not help strengthen the initiative either, writes The newspaper. In front of them, Jean-Luc Mélenchon of La France Insoumise and the Green Yannick Jadot – “The two presidential leftists with the less bleak prospects”, stagnating around 10% – opposed it.

Taubira, the solution?

“But slowly things are starting to improve”, shade it New York Times. Christiane Taubira’s pre-candidacy announcement contributed to this, since the former minister “Subordinates its decision to the ”unity‘from the left ” so as not to be a “more candidate“, Explain The newspaper.
