What if your child refuses to have a bowel movement on the potty?

It is generally between 2 and 4 years old that a child learns to be clean. However, if he delays a bit, don’t force him but let him go at his own pace.

Let him do it in his diaper

Contrary to popular belief, if your toddler doesn’t want to poop on the potty, it’s best to let them have a bowel movement in a diaper. Otherwise, it may hold back and become constipated, which can cause pain when having a bowel movement.

To help him, familiarize him with the potty by putting it near the toilet and explaining to him what it is for. Invite him to sit on it, even dressed, or to sit his toy on it. Little by little, get him to sit there at regular times, for example upon waking up, following meals or before a nap or bedtime.

Avoid giving him a toy or book at this time and encourage him to stay there a little longer if nothing happens, but never more than 5 minutes. If he can’t do it, don’t be disappointed and don’t say anything, let him get back to his business. On the other hand, if he does happen, congratulate him and compliment him to encourage him.

When should you consult?

If, despite your encouragement, your child over 4 years old refuses to go to the potty, does not manage to restrain himself or does not improve in terms of cleanliness, in this case it is preferable to consult a general practitioner or a pediatrician for try to find the reasons for his refusal or his difficulties.
