Lhe economic crisis caused by the pandemic does not affect everyone in the same way. According to The echoes, French start-ups are resisting well, and display an insolent state of health. This is evidenced by the sharp increase in the salaries of French Tech CEOs, which have increased significantly since 2020. According to a study by the Galion Project, the average increase amounts to 30%. An increase that logically follows the significant increase in funds raised by the 23 “unicorns” holders of the French Tech label.
At the start of 2022, the 10 billion euros mark in funds raised was crossed. As a result, the median salary of CEOs of start-ups now reaches 120,000 euros annually, or 10,000 euros per month. In detail, list The echoes, 75% of the managers concerned receive more than 85,000 euros per year (7,000 euros / month), while the remaining 25% receive more than 153,000 euros (12,750 euros / month). Note that this last upper bracket is marked by an increase of 19%, therefore lower than the average 30%. According to the Galion Project, these differences illustrate a harmonization of wages in the sector.

Still gender disparities
Logically, the more funds the start-ups have raised, the more their managers have seen their salaries increase. Thus, the highest salaries exclusively concern structures that have managed to raise more than 100 million euros. The echoes also notes the consistency of the distribution of salaries, the most generous payslips all corresponding to the start-ups showing the best results, and employing the most people.
On the other hand, the Galion Project notes a significant disparity between men and women. In this case, the median salary of female leaders reaches 90,000 euros per year, a 33% difference with their male colleagues. A significant gap which, moreover, has increased: it was 28% at the start of 2020. To illustrate its point, the Galion Project cites the single case of Isabelle Radier, CEO of Jolimoi. The latter receives 90,000 euros or 7,500 euros per month and confides being refused a raise by its board of directors. “At 38 years old and with 3 children, […] I don’t find that very motivating. The entrepreneur explains that she wants to use the data published by the Galion Project to negotiate a new increase in 2022.
