What diseases is not covered by the IMSS voluntary insurance? – The financial

If you do not currently have a formal employment relationship and you are concerned regarding where you might have medical services, we tell you that there is the option of paying for Voluntary Insurance at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS).

This service is also known as Family Health Insurance or Mode 33. The mechanism allows you to make voluntary contributions to access services such as surgeries, pharmacies and specialized maternity care.

However, there are certain diseases that Modality 33 of the IMSS does not address, we will tell you which ones they are so that it does not take you by surprise if you want to pay for it and have a medical emergency.


According to the IMSS, voluntary contributions do not cover pre-existing diseases such as:

  • Tumors
  • Complications of diabetes.
  • Chronic liver diseases.
  • Chronic renal failure.
  • Heart failure.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with respiratory failure.
  • Addictions
  • Mental disorders such as psychosis and dementias.
  • Congenital diseases.
  • Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or Positive Human Acquired Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

In addition, the cosmetic surgery service is not covered, as well as the delivery of glasses and hearing aids.
