BMW unveils scary iX with color-changing body at the touch of a button – Wylsacom

At CES 2022, BMW showed The iX Flow is an electric SUV with a body that changes from white to black and back at the push of a button:

Body color change is provided by E Ink, an electronic ink technology that powers e-readers like the Kindle, PocketBook and others.

BMW iX Flow uses “millions” of capsules the thickness of a human hair. Each of them contains negatively charged white and positively charged black pigments.

This gives the driver the freedom to express different facets of his personality, to enjoy the changes. The car becomes an expression of the different moods and circumstances of everyday life.

Changing the body color, in addition to beauty, also affects the absorption of heat. For example, in summer you can drive a white car: this color reflects sunlight better and it will not be so hot in the cabin. That is, the air conditioner needs to run less, which leads to less energy consumption.

E Ink itself is considered one of the most energy efficient among other image display technologies. Therefore, there is no need to worry that it will strongly “eat up” the battery charge.

The technology shown in iX Flow may one day be applicable in the future. But the iX Flow itself is unlikely to be available for purchase.
