Football: UNFP calls on the League to “protect the players” in the face of Covid-19

In front of the cases of Covid which multiply within the professional clubs of L1 and L2 – Angers-Saint-Étienne, Lille-Lorient and three matches of L2 are already postponed this weekend, the UNFP has decided to react. The players’ union relayed the appeal of club doctors regarding the return to competition of players who tested positive, in a press release on Thursday evening.

“Since we have to live, therefore work, with Covid-19 since the first months of 2020, we have learned, failing to be able to get rid of it, to know this damn virus better. And to adapt. So being positive is one thing. Recovering from it is another, and the UNFP wants to hear the club doctors when they sound the alarm: a player who has been positive cannot resume competition too quickly at the risk of putting his health at risk. in danger ”, writes the UNFP

“You should sometimes use common sense”

The body also called for more caution: “It would sometimes be advisable to use common sense and address the spirit of the health protocol, put in place to preserve the health of the players. This is the most important. “By adding, that” the requirement of the competition is such that a professional footballer can, if he is not in full possession of his physical means, run great risks. Which is not in the least possible for the UNFP! “

As a reminder, matches are maintained as soon as 20 players, including a goalkeeper, out of a group of 30 professionals are available. It is for this reason that Bordeaux-OM, fixed this Friday evening (9 p.m.) has still not been postponed. The Bordeaux club currently has 8 positive players following having had 21 last week for their Coupe de France match. But among them, many are coming out of their isolation and will not be able to play this Friday.
