Emirates News Agency – The Emirates announces “stronger commitments to our union” on its first day at the Security Council for the period 2022-2023

New York, 5th January / WAM / The United Arab Emirates announced commitments “stronger with our union” during its membership in the Security Council for the period 2022-2023, guided in this regard by commitments that include securing peace, promoting inclusiveness, building resilience and stimulating innovation, throughout its term in the Council security, and during its engagement with UN member states.

Commenting on this, Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, said: “Our work in the United Nations Security Council will reflect the tolerance, inclusiveness and belief that we represent as a country and people, and a belief that we are stronger in our union.”

Her Excellency added: “Diplomacy revolves around adopting dialogue, seeking to know different viewpoints, and paving the way for finding consensus.

Accordingly, during our membership in the Security Council, we will seek to bridge views, and for the Council to have a unified voice so that its decisions receive the largest possible support.. We look forward to working with our colleagues in the Council and in the United Nations as a whole, in order to build bridges, strengthen multilateral action and implement Council mandate.

The UAE, as an elected member of the Security Council, is committed to identifying areas through which rapprochement can be found among its members in order to fully implement the mandate of the Council.

And the UAE will not represent the Arab voice only in the Council, but will seek to represent all other member states of the United Nations, which means strengthening cooperation with regional organizations, especially the League of Arab States and the African Union.

The UAE also promises to advocate for issues that intersect with other issues in the council, including women, peace and security, climate change, and the use of technology to promote peace.. It will seek to address a range of other issues such as combating terrorism, responding to the Covid-19 pandemic and the issue of recovery from it.

During its term of membership, the UAE will chair the Security Council twice, in March 2022 and June 2023. The president of the council, which changes every month by rotation, sets the council’s agenda and chairs its permanent committees.
