A foreign company is about to oust “Ford” in car sales in America

New York, USA (CNN)—The Japanese company Toyota is preparing to dethrone Ford as the best-selling car in the United States, following Ford dominated the sales market for nearly 100 years.

As of 2005, Toyota ranked fourth in US auto sales, with General Motors, Ford and what was then known as DaimlerChrysler, with a combined 57% of US sales between them.

But in 2021, General Motors, Ford and Stellantis – the European automaker that owns Chrysler – had just 38% of the US market between them in the first nine months of the year. Even adding Tesla makes American automakers just over 40% of the sales market.

All eyes are on Toyota and GM’s scheduled year-end sales announcement on Tuesday. GM’s sales have fallen behind Toyota (TM) for the first nine months, and its fourth-quarter results are expected to lag behind Toyota as well.

Whether Toyota will be able to maintain its sales leadership in the United States in the coming years is not clear at the moment, according to experts.
