The Colombian government decided, on Monday January 3, to send military reinforcements to the department of Arauca, in the east of the country, on the border with Venezuela. Clashes on Sunday and Monday between guerrillas fighting over drug routes in the region have left at least 23 dead.
On Tuesday, January 4, the Colombian army was still looking for possible new bodies, following the latest report announced by the government reported 23 dead during fighting, Sunday and Monday, between different guerrillas, in the department. eastern Arauca, border with Venezuela.
After an exceptional Defense Council held in this very zone, the Minister of Defense, Diego Molano, announced among other things the sending of military reinforcements:
We have decided on new measures to ensure security in the department of Arauca: we are going to strengthen the staff on site with 600 additional soldiers, increase rewards for intelligence leading to the arrest of leaders, permanently post 300 soldiers on the roads. In the longer term, new military installations will be built. ”
For many months now, several guerrillas have been fighting over the drug routes in this area where the border is very porous, to such an extent that Colombia estimated that the fighting had started on Sunday January 2 in Venezuelan territory. These two large countries share 2,200 kilometers of border but have not had diplomatic relations since 2018.
