Pertussis epidemic at a research station in Antarctica, one of the most remote places in the world.

A Belgian research station in Antarctica is facing a coronavirus outbreak, although the people who work there are fully vaccinated and are in one of the most remote places in the world, notes bbc.com.

Since December 14 and so far, at least 16 of the 25 employees of the Prinses Elisabeth station have been infected with covid-19.

So far, those infected have shown mild symptoms, News.ro notes.

“The situation is not dramatic. Quarantining some of the staff was a downside, but work at the research station was not significantly affected. All station employees were able to leave on January 12 with a scheduled flight. But they expressed their desire to stay and continue their research, ”said Joseph Cheek, project manager of the International Polar Foundation.

The first positive case was recorded on December 14, in a member of the team who had arrived on site seven days earlier, according to Agerpres.ro.

Those infected were gradually quarantined, but the virus continued to circulate.

Everyone who arrived at the research station was to be vaccinated and tested.

There are two doctors at the station to respond to emergencies.

Until the virus cleared up, new arrivals at the research station were put on hold.
