Juan Carr, another victim of fake news

This Monday, from early, Juan Carr’s name remained among the trends of Twitter. But its mention was not due to the social activity that the director of Red Solidaria has maintained for several decades, but rather it was of a fake news (another one) of Internet users linked to Juntos por el Cambio. It is that an attempt was made to disseminate that the national government paid him a salary of 350,000 pesos for the position of adviser to the Economic and Social Council, a body that Gustavo Beliz commands. The version is disjointed as soon as public information is consulted: all the members of that national body fulfill their function ad honorem.

The mechanism is usually similar in the vast majority of cases. An account linked to the opposition bloc with thousands of followers spreads false information and it is quickly replicated by hundreds of users who repeat the same information content. In this case it was the user @atlanticsurff – in biography he usually chooses a profile of an Australian model who has already reported him for using his image – who invented an alleged monthly salary for Carr ruled by decree 298/2022 -nonexistent- of the national administration. Within a few hours, the publication reached more than 2,000 retweets, 3,600 “likes” and thousands of other responses to the post. And, thus, the term “Juan Carr” climbed to the top of the Trending Topic, with the vast majority of negative mentions.

The smear campaign even reached the national deputy of PRO Fernando Iglesias, who, far from checking the information, chose to criticize the social leader, via Twitter: “It was necessary to organize pajamas party on soccer fields and announce them with a contrite face. It was there,” he pointed out, with supposed irony, for the campaigns once morest him. cold in the City of Buenos Aires that Carr.

And the only thing that did not appear on Twitter -the campaign included insults, insults and even threats once morest the leader- it was just the information: The national government does not pay Carr a monthly salary for his participation in the Economic and Social Council. Thus, it appears in national decree 298/2021 of which, in its article Nº2, it is specified that “the members that make up the ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL will carry out their work on an ad honorem basis.”
