Hossam Hosni, Head of the Scientific Committee to Combat Corona at the Ministry of Health, said that large quantities of the drug “Paxlovid”, produced by the American company Pfizer, had been contracted.
“Hosni” added, in statements to Masrawy, today, that the quantities are scheduled to arrive starting from this January, pointing out that it will be intended for simple and medium cases infected with Corona.
He pointed out that its effectiveness reaches 70% in treating infections, which is a very good percentage and is used at the beginning of infection with the virus.
Hosny indicated that the new drug will be available in hospitals following importing it to Egypt.
The drug baxlovid, known as a protease inhibitor, is designed to block an enzyme that the virus needs in order to multiply.
And the company Pfizer said that the drug contributed to reducing the rate of hospitalizations and deaths by regarding 90% when taken during the first days following the onset of symptoms.
And earlier, the US Food and Drug Administration granted permission to use the anti-viral drug from Pfizer, “Paxlovid”.
According to a statement by the Food and Drug Administration, it is necessary to start taking the drug “as soon as following confirmation of infection with Covid-19, and within 5 days of the onset of symptoms.”
And US President Joe Biden previously described the drug as “an important step forward on our way out of the pandemic.”
