Current epicenter of the pandemic COVID-19, Europe It exceeded 100 million cases detected since the discovery of the virus in December 2019, a figure that represents more than a third of the infections in the world, according to an AFP count carried out this Saturday at 6:45 PM GMT.

The 100,074,753 cases in the European region (which encompasses 52 countries and territories from the Atlantic coast to Russia and Azerbaijan) represent more than a third of the 288,279,803 cases in the world, since the start of the pandemic.
With more than 4.9 million infections in the last seven days (59% more than the previous week), this region faces unprecedented levels of cases. The ten countries (excluding microstates) with the highest incidence (number of cases in seven days per 100,000 inhabitants) in the world are all located in Europe: led by Denmark (2,045), Cyprus (1,969) and Ireland (1,964).
Of the 52 countries and territories in this region, 17 have broken their records of cases detected in a week in recent days.
These figures are taken from the balances that the health authorities of each country report daily. But an important part of the less severe or asymptomatic cases remains undetected despite the increase in massive diagnostic tests in several countries. In addition, the policies on the tests of each country are different.
The acceleration of infections is not accompanied, for now on the European continent, by an increase in deaths. In the last seven days there was an average of 3,413 deaths a day, 7% less than the previous week. At its highest point, this figure reached 5,735 daily deaths on average, in January 2021.
The European population is slightly more vaccinated than the world average. 65% of Europeans are partially vaccinated and 61% are fully vaccinated (compared to 58 and 49% respectively worldwide), according to data collected by the website “Our World in Data”.
