New Delhi: Harbhajan Singh has publicly criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) following their announcement of his retirement from professional cricket. The veteran spinner, who achieved the remarkable feat of 400 Test wickets by age 31, asserts he could have easily added another 100-150 wickets had he received adequate backing.
Harbhajan indicated that Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the team’s captain at the time of his exclusion, was aware of the situation. He alleges that his removal stemmed from the influence of specific BCCI personnel.
Harbhajan reflected, “Fortune has generally favored me. However, extraneous factors consistently hindered my progress. This despite my consistently strong bowling and fielding performances. Reaching 400 Test wickets at 31 showcases my capabilities. Had my career extended another 4-5 years, an additional 100-150 wickets would have been readily attainable.”
He continued, “Indeed, Mahendra Singh Dhoni captained the team at that time. Yet, decisions impacting my career extended beyond Dhoni’s authority. Certain BCCI officials played a decisive role. Their lack of support for me was evident. Dhoni, as captain, may have acquiesced, but the BCCI’s authority superseded even the captain’s. BCCI officials always held more sway than the captain, coach, or team.”
Singh further noted the disparity in support received by Dhoni from the BCCI.
He stated, “Dhoni enjoyed unparalleled support from the BCCI. Similar backing for other players would have undoubtedly fostered equivalent success. Otherwise, many lack the opportunity to truly shine.”
Harbhajan also expressed disappointment at the lack of a proper send-off.
He lamented, “Every cricketer dreams of a fitting farewell in the Indian jersey. Unfortunately, that wasn’t my experience. Life doesn’t always unfold as planned. VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, and Virender Sehwag also faced similar situations.”
