Tesla’s quest for “green nickel” in New Caledonia

The electric vehicle producer has emerged as the primary purchaser of nickel from the Goro mine in New Caledonia. This crucial component for its vehicle batteries, until recently extracted through methods deemed environmentally damaging, socially irresponsible, and politically fraught, as noted by the New York Times.

The picturesque New Caledonian coastline, bordering the Coral Sea, undergoes a stark transformation ascending a hill at the southern end of the main island. Tesla assumed the position of primary customer in late September 2021. The automaker aims to oversee its supply chain, ensuring ethically and ecologically sound mineral extraction for its car batteries.
