Unemployment falls to 7.5% in the September-November quarter and has reached a lower level since January 2020 | Economy

In twelve months, the estimate of total employed persons grew 8.1%, mainly influenced by the sectors of construction (28.5%), commerce (8.2%), accommodation and food service (45.0%).

According to the information provided this Friday, December 31, by the National Institute of Statistics (OTHER), a 7.5% was the unemployment rate in Chile during the moving quarter September-November 2021.

This, with respect to the data registered in the National Employment Survey (ENE), produced by the institute.

The figure meant a decrease of 3.3 percentage points in twelve months, product of the rise in the labor force (4.3%), lower than that presented by employed persons (8.1%).

To this is added the 27.0% decrease in the unemployed, affected by those who were unemployed (-28,3%) and those looking for work for the first time (-11,7%).

By sex, the unemployment rate for women stood at 7,6%, and that of men in 7,5%, decreasing 3.6 pp. and 2.9 pp., respectively.

Respect for employed persons had an increase of 8.1%, influenced by both women (10.9%) and men (6.2%).

On the other hand, absent employed persons, who represented 6.2% of the total employed population, decreased 28.5%, equivalent to 210,845 people.

The expansion of the employed was influenced by construction (28.5%), commerce (8.2%) and accommodation and food service (45.0%), while, by occupational category, the increase was observed in people formal wage earners (5.9%) and female workers on their own (17,4%).

Unemployment and volume of work

The rate of seasonally adjusted unemployment eliminates the effects of seasonal factors of a non-economic nature, those that also influence their behavior.

In this sense, the estimated indicator was 7.9%, falling 0.3 pp. compared to the previous moving quarter.

This, as a consequence of increase in the workforce (0.5%) that resulted from the decrease in unemployed people (-2.5%) and the increase in employed women (0.7%).

In twelve months, the volume of work measured through the total number of effective hours worked by employed persons, amounted to 11.6%.

Similarly, the average hours worked it grew 3.2%, reaching 37.6 hours.

In the Government the figures stood out, with a share of uncertainty due to the projections towards 2022. Although the Minister of Labor, Patricio Melero said that without a doubt we are on the right foot.


The expansion of the employed was mainly influenced by activities such as the construction, commerce, accommodation and food service.

Despite this, it was indicated that there are still regarding 570 thousand people who return in relation to the beginning of 2020.
