94th Edition of Aalst Carnival: Tradition, Controversy, and Current Events

2024-02-11 19:55:00

This year the 94th edition of the Aalst carnival takes place with its fanfare launch at 1 p.m. this Sunday. Among all the traditions that are at the heart of this folklore there are nods to current events. This year, Alexandre De Croo was impertinently in the spotlight. But he is not the only one: Conner Rousseau was also entitled to his caricature, and not the least: the politician was transformed into a Hitler figure. He was indeed sporting his mustache and his face was surrounded by words written in German on a jacket imitating those of the SS.

A reference which risks being poorly received by Conner Rousseau. The latter had made insulting remarks towards the Roma in September 2023, quickly finding himself at the heart of a controversy which led him to leave his post as president of Vooruit shortly after.
