Region Östergötland’s economy is in free fall, regional director Mikael Borin said at a press conference on Wednesday, several media reports. Last year, the health care in the Östergötland Region went back by almost SEK 1.7 billion and Mikael Borin recently flagged that more measures would be needed to get the economy back on its feet. After the regional board’s meeting on Wednesday, it is now clear that 900 regional employees will be notified of dismissal. In a press release says regional board chairman Marie Morell (M) that the decision is regrettable, but unavoidable.
– Region Östergötland is in an extremely challenging economic situation and the measures previously decided and ongoing have not had sufficient effect. On the contrary, the deficit in health and medical care continues to increase, and further efforts are required for us to be able to reverse the trend.
The notice will above all apply to the groups that have increased the most in recent years. The regional management office and its administrative activities are affected, but also healthcare, writes TT. However, doctors and nurses are exempt. Here instead, employment suspension with a special needs test applies.
– It is of course a relief that no doctors have to lose their jobs, but our colleagues are affected and if, for example, many care administrators disappear, it will mean less relief for us. This in turn will mean that doctors cannot use their unique competence to the same extent, says the chairman of the medical association Niklas Theorin to Läkartidningen.
He is also critical of the fact that the region has not prioritized resources more clearly in the past.
– The curves for the economy have been pointing downwards for several years. If you had slowed down a little earlier, there would not have had to be this cross rivet with notice, he says.
