90% of women combine 2 cardiovascular risk factors

Women’s health is increasingly well known, although it has long been relegated to the background.

“Taking an interest in the relationship between gender and health makes it possible to carry out an ethical reflection on the contribution of social and cultural factors to health inequalities between the sexes” reminds Inserm.

In order to carry out its study, the association relied on a panel of 4,300 women aged 14 to 95 (54 years on average) screened in the Bus du Cœur des Femmes in 2021 and 2022. The data collected was obtained “a unique panorama of the cardiovascular and gynecological health of women”.

90% of participants combine 2 cardiovascular risk factors

Most of the time, women underestimate their cardiovascular health and it is wrong since the diseases related to it are the first cause of death among them.

The study revealed that 90% of participants had at least 2 cardiovascular risk factors and that 50% combine at least 2 gyneco-obstetric risk factors.

“Among the 3,878 women who had at least two cardiovascular risk factors, 51% also had at least two gyneco-obstetric risk factors. 79% have no cardiovascular follow-up and 37% have no gynecological follow-up. The risk is real. Only 10% of the screened population is at very low cardiovascular and gynecological-obstetrical risk,” the report states.

High blood pressure is ‘grossly underdiagnosed’

Among the 4,300 participants, 39% have high blood pressure, including a third very high. And this, despite treatments for this hypertension in 62% of women.

Insufficient medical follow-up at menopause

66% of women in the panel are postmenopausal (2,830), knowing that the average age of menopause is 50 years.

Of these women, 26% take hormone therapy to treat menopausal symptoms. With a cardiovascular risk associated with these treatments, this reinforces the importance of regular gynecological and cardiovascular monitoring. However, this is not the case since 79% of women have no cardiovascular follow-up and 37% have no gynecological follow-up.

Stress, overweight and tobacco consumption: scourges for women’s health

Data on stress reveal that women are stressed at 68% of the panel. 27% reported suffering from a depressive disorder.

Moreover, overweight, which tends to spread more widely to the world population, concerns 62% of the women in the panel.

40% of women have insufficient physical activity and 15% are smokers, which shows the need to strengthen prevention in these areas.

Prevention, management and understanding at the heart of women’s health

In order to be able to offer the most precarious women a holistic service for their cardiovascular health, the association has created Buses du Cœur. This is a large itinerant operation of information, awareness and prevention on cardiovascular diseases.

« The results of this study are much more alarming than we anticipated.. We estimate that we have had a positive effect on the health of nearly 4,000 women, since 90% of the women screened had at least two cardiovascular risk factors. The Women’s Heart Bus has delivered both keys to understanding these women to better understand their health, with concrete tools: integration into a course of care when necessary, delivery of an automatic blood pressure monitor, pedagogy on self-measurement for the development of self-monitoring” declared Thierry Drilhon, co-founder of Agir pour le Cœur des Femmes, administrator and business manager, President of the Franco British Chamber.
