When the couple made up of a journalist and a Spanish translator bought this apartment 90 m² in Laranjeiras (RJ), I already had the intention of putting everything down to integrate the spaces. For this mission, architect Ana Neri stepped in.

Originally, the apartment had three bedrooms, a very cramped living room and kitchen. The clients asked to open and integrate the spaces, making circulation more fluid, and improving natural lighting. With the renovation, one of the bedrooms became a living room, the areas of the old kitchen and the first bedroom merged, opening space for a new dining room and an open, integrated and very airy kitchen.

With joinery in an earthy tone and a hydraulic tile floor from the same color family, the kitchen also features reproductions of the building’s original frames.with the aim of organizing internal views and bringing unity, in addition to seeking a home atmosphere.

Another room from the apartment’s original layout gave way to the new living room, next to the balcony. According to the architect, one of the biggest challenges of the project was understanding how transitions between environments would occur, in a fluid, light and broad way.

“Nothing more aggregating and stimulating to promote long conversations and meetings than a table with generous dimensions in the kitchen and, on top of that, super integrated into the dining room”, evaluates the architect. The structural reinforcement with metal beams allowed the apartment to gain a character of “transparency” and permeability. But, in addition, the connections between spaces also occurred through the chromatic play in the volumes and joinery that “talk” to each other.

“This background of the apartment brought us some good and pleasant surprises, which only elevated the spatial and aesthetic quality of the apartment. One of them was the possibility of complete opening of what previously, in the original plan, was a service room and we transformed it into an office. Without a doubt, this change made it possible to expand, breathe and integrate the office with the service area, which is super bright and airy”, reports Ana Neri.

“The second good surprise was the demolition brickmassive, which we found when peeling the walls and, unanimously, we decided to keep it visible to further reinforce the atmosphere we were looking for”, he adds.

O bathroom The original was enlarged to allow the installation of a wider and more comfortable bench. To enhance natural light, light-colored coverings and textures were used. Frontal (artificial) lighting occurs indirectly, both in the custom-made joinery of the mirror and also in the “globe” sconces above it. Notice the shower lining in hydraulic tiles with colorful and delicate designs, in the hexagonal tile flooring and the wooden skirting board, which contributed to giving a vintage touch and making the space more welcoming.

With a light and clear look, in the couple’s bedroom, the side of the closet and a small initial section of wall were transformed into a narrow bookshelf, making access to the room more lively and warm. Another highlight is the light wooden side furniture (fixed to the wall, in front of the bed), with drawers that help organize customers’ personal items, without visually polluting, and the small metal shelves that function as side tables to support the bed. . The blue paint – up to half the height of the bed wall – helped dress up the headboard. Finally, the cabinet’s joinery featured natural straw on the bottom, bringing texture and movement to the furniture’s design, while the top was finished in light gray lacquer.
