All women are at risk of developing breast cancer, and the risk increases with age. Knowing the symptoms of this serious disease can help detect problems early, when the chances of treatment are greater.
“You are the first line of defense, which is the main reason why it is so important to know your breasts are normal and to let your doctor know if something seems unusual,” said Dr. Esther Dobrovsky, a breast surgeon at Houston Methodist Cancer Center in the US.
There are 9 signs of breast cancer that every woman should know.
1- The blocks:
This is the first and most obvious sign. A lump can be hard, soft, firm, or even mobile, but anything that doesn’t feel right in your breast should be checked out immediately.
2- Pain:
Your breasts can ache or sag from the wrong bra, or even when your period is approaching, but if the pain persists for more than two weeks, get checked out.
3- Visible veins:
If you suddenly start noticing prominent veins, it might be a sign of breast cancer.
4- Discharge from the nipples:
If you do not breastfeed and something comes out of your nipples, this is a warning that you have breast cancer.
5- Redness:
If you experience redness due to warmth, you should see a gynecologist.
6- Peeling the skin:
If your skin suddenly shows signs of peeling, it might be due to cancer.
7- An inverted nipple:
If the lump is stuck to the back of the nipple, it may invert the nipples, so you should see your GP as soon as you notice this.
8- Swollen lymph nodes:
Many women don’t realize that breast cancer can present as swollen lymph nodes as well.
9- Change in breast size:
If you notice a sudden change in breast size, it might mean that you have breast cancer.
