88 homes affected by the strong earthquake in Esmeraldas

88 homes with partial damage and one with greater damage in the Chamera sector, is the current result of the evaluations following the strong earthquake of magnitude 6.0 that shook the city of Esmeraldas, almost at midnight yesterday.

As part of the response actions carried out by the institutions of the National Decentralized Risk Management System, in the field of Health and Pre-hospital Care, tents were installed to protect newborns from Hospital Delfina Torres during the time of evacuation.

The Ministry of Health carries out the first evaluations and indicates that the Delfina Torres Hospital reports damage to the ceiling in several areas, damage to the ceramic walls, in the first level units there are no damages.

Several strong followingshocks have occurred in the minutes following the earthquake that occurred at 11:28 p.m. and its epicenter was located just 11 kilometers south of the city of Esmeraldas. The shock spread panic and led many people to leave their homes following several parts of the city went without electricity.

This telluric movement was felt in eleven of the twenty-four provinces that make up Ecuador, with a strong intensity in Esmeraldas and moderate in Pichincha, where the capital Quito is located, and as well as in Manabí, Cotopaxi and Santo Domingo, according to the National Service of Risk and Emergency Management (SNGRE).

According to the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School, at least two important followingshocks were recorded in the two hours following the first telluric movement, the most important of which was 5.1 magnitude on the Richter scale, at 00:53 .

Given this situation, the president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, indicated that both the national and provincial authorities are evaluating the damage caused by this mishap and explained that “inter-institutional teams are in the territory to attend to any need.”
