81st Golden Globes: Attempting a new beginning

The prestigious film and television awards have been relaunched and are opening the hot phase of the US awards season, which will be followed by the Oscar Gala on March 10th. In many categories there is a blockbuster duel for victory: “Barbie” once morest “Oppenheimer”.

Since 1944, the “Globes” have been awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). But the small association came under massive criticism because of, among other things, allegations of bribery and a lack of diversity. Last summer, the HFPA members agreed to sell the rights to the prize to the investment firm Eldridge and the company Dick Clark Productions (DCP). Instead of just under 100 association members, there are now 300 experienced film journalists from 75 countries who vote on the awards. It is said that 47 percent of those entitled to vote are women, and 60 percent have an ethnically diverse background.

At the top of the nomination list for the 81st Globe Awards is “Barbie” by US director Greta Gerwig with nine nominations. Christopher Nolan’s drama “Oppenheimer” regarding the inventor of the atomic bomb has eight nominations. Martin Scorsese’s historical thriller “Killers Of The Flower Moon” and the bizarre fairy tale “Poor Things” by director Giorgos Lanthimos follow with seven nominations each.

In total, awards are given out in 27 film and television categories. Celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Florence Pugh, America Ferrera, Michelle Yeoh, Daniel Kaluuya and Will Ferrell were announced as presenters who would hand out trophies on stage. The nominees include stars such as Margot Robbie, Emma Stone, Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper, Robert Downey Jr. and Nicolas Cage.

The German actress Sandra Hülser (45) is also nominated for her role in “Anatomy of a Case” and has a good chance: the day before the Globes awards ceremony, she received her second US critics’ award for it. In the vote of the National Society of Film Critics (NSFC), she was ahead of Emma Stone (nominated in the “Musical or Comedy” category at the Globes for “Poor Things”) and her Globe competitor Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”).

The CBS broadcaster will broadcast the 81st trophy awards live. The gala will be hosted by Filipino-American comedian Jo Koy.
