80 residents of Latvia have already died in a year

On May 8, in the center of Riga, opposite the Laima clock, on Basteikalns street, from 11:00 to 16:00, an event will be held to mark the launch of the “Join the Solar Guard!” campaign.

During the event, everyone will be able to receive advice from a dermatologist from the Association of Health Centers, learn regarding their risks of developing skin cancer and learn how to properly conduct a skin self-examination, as well as learn regarding the safe and correct use of sunscreens.

Olga Valtsina, founder and director of the organization “One Step Ahead of Melanoma”:

“In Scandinavia, despite limited sunshine, the summer months experience periods of intense ultraviolet radiation, which contributes to a greater increase in melanoma cases. This is further aggravated by the factor of fair skin and increased susceptibility to sunburn among residents of these regions. This is evidenced by a recent study from the Swedish Karolinska Institute.

Researchers also associate the high prevalence of melanoma in Sweden and Denmark with active travel by residents to resorts in warm countries, which is also popular in Latvia.”

Researchers believe this growth in Northern Europe will continue until at least 2030.

Raymond Karls, head of the association “Dermatologists once morest skin cancer”:

“Unfortunately, the number of new cases, as well as mortality data, show that prevention and public awareness are still insufficient, and sun protection is not always carried out correctly and to the extent required.”
