On Wednesday, the son of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, sent a strongly worded message to the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, in response to the continued detention of his brother Hannibal Gaddafi in Lebanese prisons for 8 years and his rejection of demands for his release.
Saif Gaddafi wrote in the message, which was published by local media, “Libya will rise from its slump, and its roar will roar, which you know, and then the oppressors will know which coup they turn.”
The Lebanese judiciary charges Muammar Gaddafi’s son with “concealing information related to the fate of Imam Musa al-Sadr and his two companions, Sheikh Muhammad Yaqoub and journalist Abbas Badr al-Din, who went missing in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, in 1978, following their arrival at the invitation of Muammar Gaddafi, and participating in the crime of hiding them.”
The judiciary refuses to release Hannibal Gaddafi, despite pledges by the Libyan authorities to cooperate legally and humanely in the case of the disappearance of Musa al-Sadr and his two companions, and to help uncover the truth.
The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office had sent a letter to the President of the Judicial Council, Judge Suhail Abboud, the Public Prosecutor of Cassation, Judge Ghassan Oweidat, and the judicial investigator, Judge Zaher Hamadeh, in which he offered cooperation and exchange of information in a way that would allow the Libyan judiciary to interrogate persons accused by Lebanon of involvement in the kidnapping of al-Sadr, in exchange for Hand over Hannibal, subject him to investigation, and provide the Lebanese judiciary with the confessions he makes.
The issue of Hannibal Gaddafi’s detention returned to the spotlight, following announcing the deterioration of his health following he entered a hunger strike to protest once morest what he considers “arbitrary and political arrest”, and to denounce the procrastination in resolving his case and the injustice he was subjected to.
