The 8-year-old girl gave up her inheritance of millions of dollars from her family’s diamond business to enter the nun life.
Indian girl Devanshi Sanghvi (8 years old) is the heir to diamond group “Sanghvi and Sons” in Surat city.
According to Zee News, Surat is dubbed the “Diamond City”, due to its important role in the global gem trade.
However, Sanghvi gave up the right to inherit a fortune worth millions of dollars to become a Jain nun. Members of the Sanghvi family are also Jainists. This is a small and ancient religion in India that emphasizes opposition to violence, strict vegetarianism, and love for all creatures from small to large.
This week, baby Sanghvi took part in a 4-day ceremony to assume her new position. Photos shared on social media show Sanghvi sitting on a chariot pulled by an elephant.
On January 18, baby Sanghvi went to a temple and changed her gorgeous outfit to a simple white cotton one, and then shaved her head.
A witness present at the ceremony said that Sanghvi was considered a prominent member of the Jain community in the city of Surat, as she proved to be devout from an early age.
According to local media, Sanghvi has never watched TV, movies, or went to malls and restaurants. Instead, she regularly attends temple ceremonies.
In addition, baby Sanghvi is also the youngest person to participate in the “diksha” ritual to shed all possessions to enter the life of a monk. Sanghvi’s parents also said that their daughter is very eager to become a nun.
According to ICRA, the Sanghvi family’s diamond business group was founded in 1981 with an estimated fortune of 5 billion Rupees ($61 million).
