8 prison guards arrested for human trafficking case in a prison
The Penitentiary System reported that eight guards were arrested for a case of human trafficking in a Guatemalan prison.

The Penitentiary System (SP) reported this Friday, August 16, that eight prison guards were arrested for a case of human trafficking in a detention center.
He added that the SP is collaborating in the investigation and affirmed “its commitment to combat this crime in the country’s prisons.”
In a video posted on social media by the institution, the director general of prisons, Sergio Vela, reported that they do what the law allows them to do to combat human trafficking, exploitation and any form of sexual violence in the country’s prisons.
He added that they collaborated with the National Civil Police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office so that the investigations resulted in the arrest of eight guards involved in a case of human trafficking.
The SP added that the arrests were in Suchitepéquez, El Progreso, Baja Verapaz, and Guatemala City.
Most of those arrested also face charges of dereliction of duty.
He said they are working on a penitentiary renovation for the recovery of prison centers.
