Strictly following certain lifestyle habits concerning food, sport or stress, would extend one’s life expectancy by at least 20 years, American researchers have revealed.
Adopter 8 healthy daily habits would extend your life expectancy by more than 20 years suggests a study American whose first results were presented on July 24, 2023 at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, in Boston (United States). To define these 8 habits, researchers studied more than 719,000 US veterans, ages 40-99between 2011 and 2019 and found that people who follow these eight healthy lifestyle routines can expect to live longer, 24 years old on average for men and 21 years old for women, compared to those who have none of these habits. Here are the 8 simple rules to follow to lengthen your life:
being physically active, not having an opioid addiction, not smoking, managing stress, having a good diet, not drinking regularly, having good sleep hygiene having positive social relationships
Low physical activity, opioids and tobacco increase risk of death by 30-45%
“We were very surprised at how beneficial adopting one, two, three or all of the eight lifestyle factors might be.said Xuan-Mai T. Nguyen, one of the study’s authors and a health scientist at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The results also showed that:
► Low physical activity, opioid use and smoking were the factors with the greatest impact on life expectancy, associated with a approximately 30-45% higher risk of death during the study period.
► Stress, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet and poor sleep hygiene were each associated with an increase inregarding 20% of the risk of death.
► And lack of positive social relationships was associated with a increased risk of death by 5%.
“It’s never too late to adopt a healthy lifestyle” a defended T. Nguyen. Thus, although these habits are more beneficial when adopted early, changes made in their 40s, 50s or 60s can also provide significant health and longevity benefits. Although being an observational study and not proving definitive causality, these findings align with a growing body of research supporting the role of lifestyle factors in preventing chronic disease and promoting healthy aging. Adopting a healthy and balanced lifestyle can be one of the most effective ways to increase your life expectancy.
