8-0 win – FC Bayern overwhelmed Darmstadt on Neuer’s comeback

With an 8-0 home win against Darmstadt 98, the German soccer record champions overtook VfB Stuttgart and, at least until Sunday, Bayer Leverkusen and returned to the top of the table. There were three expulsions in the first 45 minutes in Munich on Saturday. Stuttgart lost at home to Hoffenheim and slipped back to third place.

Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich was shown a red card after just four minutes in the Allianz Arena for an emergency stop. The DFB player had knocked down Darmstadt’s Marvin Mehlem half a meter from the penalty area. But the numerical inferiority didn’t last long, because in the 21st minute Klaus Gjasula also saw red for a similar offense. His “victim” was ÖFB team player Konrad Laimer. Correctly, there was no penalty in this case either.

The 98ers weren’t shocked immediately afterwards and were the more active team at times. In the 41st minute, however, a second guest player, Matej Maglica, picked up a red card. After the break, Bayern returned to the pitch as if they had been changed. Harry Kane (51′) only took the lead after Mazroui’s assist, then Laimer set up for Leroy Sane (56′). Jamal Musiala increased the score to 3-0 in the 60th minute. Sane (64th), Kane (69th, 88th) with a shot from his own half, substitute Thomas Müller (72nd) and Musiala (76th) completed the sweeping victory. The underemployed newcomer was a side note.

Hoffenheim won 3-2 against previous league runners-up VfB Stuttgart. Grischa Prömel (5th) and Wout Weghorst (21st) scored for the Kraichgauer before the break. A downer in the first half, however, was the loss of Florian Grillitsch, who had to leave the field in the 32nd minute after a short treatment. After the break, Stuttgart also scored twice, but Robert Skov’s goal in the 66th minute secured Hoffenheim’s success.

At VfL Wolfsburg, Patrick Wimmer was back in the starting line-up after weeks against FC Augsburg. His compatriot Pavao Pervan was also in the first eleven, replacing the injured Koen Casteels in goal. While the ex-LASK player played through, Wimmer was substituted in the 52nd minute when the score was 2-1 with a suspected foot injury. Augsburg then turned the game around and won 3-2. Pervan was powerless to concede goals.
