In 2019, 86% of Brazilians rejected mining permits in indigenous territories edit
247 — According to a recent survey by the Datasheet, held on March 29 and 30, 2023 with 2,028 people from 126 Brazilian municipalities over 16 years old, 73% of the population is once morest mining on indigenous lands. Furthermore, most Brazilians believe that this activity is primarily responsible for the deaths of people in the Yanomami territory.
Three out of four Brazilians agree that the courts should punish businessmen who profit from illegal gold and release prospectors. Among these, 57% totally agree with punishing businessmen and releasing miners. On the other hand, 36% of businessmen believe that the government should allow mining activities on indigenous lands, which represents an increase of 12 percentage points in relation to the opinion of the general population.
With regard to the opinion on the dependence of indigenous people on the government, 79% of respondents think that they should develop economic activities so as not to depend on state resources.
It is interesting to note that, in a previous Datafolha survey on the same topic in 2019, 86% of Brazilians rejected permission to mine in indigenous territories, once morest the 73% who disagreed with the statement in the current survey. In addition, 24% of respondents are in favor of mining on indigenous lands, while 2% do not know and 1% neither agree nor disagree.
Regarding the opinion that mining is the main cause of indigenous deaths, 70% of respondents agree with this statement, while only 49% of businessmen agree.
