It was a party Saturday evening in Lower Town of Quebec as several thousand people blew their trumpets along the 3rd Avenue where the allegorical floats and the king of the party, Bonhomme, paraded on the occasion of the first night parade of the 70th Quebec Carnival.

Pyrotechnics, jigs and circuses, all the ingredients were brought together to spread the magic of Carnival in Limoilou. Even mother nature joined the party even though the mercury was far from the -25 degrees that almost forced the cancellation of the first parade last year.

“Everything was perfect. It was very entertaining and there was definitely something for everyone. I really liked that almost everything was at a good height for the children, which made the parade even more pleasant for them,” says Mélanie Labonté-Côté, who came with her three children.

Despite a superb performance by some 350 artists, it was the birthday boy who still stole the show. Perched at the top of his giant birthday cake, Bonhomme was undoubtedly the most anticipated of all and true to form, he had energy to spare.
“It was my favorite. I was really looking forward to seeing him and what’s more, he was really handsome,” adds his daughter Simone.

“Hats off to everyone”
Near 9th Street, other families were crowded around the fences, all looking for a better angle to admire the acrobats twirling in the air accompanied by lights that twinkled just like the children’s eyes.

“The show is magnificent. We are used to coming year following year and honestly, they pulled out all the stops for the 70th anniversary,” says Jérôme Cloutier in the company of his partner Marie and his granddaughter Lou-Anna.

“We drove 1.5 hours to come and enjoy Carnival activities today. It’s one of the beautiful parades I’ve seen, hats off to everyone who worked on it. It really ends our day well,” adds Denis Lacombe, alongside his wife Pauline.

Joy might also be seen on the face of the general director of the Carnival, Marie-Ève Jacob, who seemed extremely satisfied with the participation.
“We mightn’t be happier. Absolutely all the ingredients are there. The weather is nice and the people are there so that motivates the artists even more,” she confided to Journal.
