7 years of development for Kill the Justice League

Video game and superhero fans are in for a treat with the upcoming release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Announced in August 2020, this game has experienced many twists and turns which lead some to believe that it will be a resounding failure.

Initially planned as an online game, like the disaster experienced by Square Enix’s Avengers, Suicide Squad ultimately changed direction following this flop. We were even able to see a preview of the gameplay during Sony State of Play in February 2023, showing similarities with Fortnite. An attempt to rally fans of online gaming, but is it the right choice?

Following this reveal, a playable alpha version was revealed, and I can say this now that the NDA has been lifted: the game is boring, uninteresting and even sad to play through. Rocksteady also decided to resurrect Batman from the Arkhamverse, undoing an ambiguous ending to the previous episode.

The studio has suffered numerous leaks since the alpha release, claiming that Poison Ivy and the Joker will also make a return, undoing their harrowing deaths. All of this, cumulatively, shows that Rocksteady lost its identity in the development of this game.

This is a real loss, because Rocksteady’s talent lies in creating games with rich stories, not producing online nonsense. The studio is capable of producing quality AAA games, and seeing it go down this path is a real shame.
