After reading (and analyzing) the report, Sport Équipement has selected for you the seven pieces of information to remember.

#1 Running ( once more) at the top of the most practiced activities

This year, the trails were covered at a running pace!

Star of all disciplines, the running is the most downloaded sport on the application, in France and everywhere on the planet.

  • Cycling (electric bike included);
  • Walking;
  • The trail;
  • Gravel and mountain biking;
  • Hiking ;
  • The virtual bike;
  • Swimming ;
  • Downhill skiing.

The French ranking is not very different, although with some inversions in the order of popular sports.

We thus find following the running:

  • Cycling (electric bike included);
  • The trail;
  • Walking;
  • Gravel and mountain biking;
  • Hiking ;
  • Downhill skiing ;
  • Swimming ;
  • The virtual bike.

#2 An unprecedented craze for the outdoors

Everybody out !

Preparing for an event remains carrot #1!

In France, 53% of users say they find motivation for effort by thinking regarding their sports goals.

This source of motivation is shared by 48% of athletes around the world.

Among the other boosters mentioned, users also cite:

  • Refusal to procrastinate (46%);
  • Listening to a motivating song (30%);
  • A coffee (22%);
  • Consulting their training plan (22%);
  • Watching a boosting video (12%);
  • A trip to the toilet (11%).

#5 Rowing, the most practiced group sport around the world

In 2023, rowing was the sport most practiced by groups of two or more athletes.

So, 40% of activities downloaded in groups concern rowing outings.

Then follow ice skating, rollerblading, ski touring, canoeing, cycling and running.

In France, the Nordic skiing comes in first place among activities practiced with others (34%), closely followed by snowshoes (33%) and canoeing (31%).

#6 Travel is not an obstacle to physical activity

Traveling is not a reason to stop exercising, on the contrary.

Even on the go, Strava users continue to put on their sneakers to run the streets.

The “Mile 24” of the Berlin Marathon is also the section of running most recorded by athletes on the move.

In France, this is the portion from the Pont au Change to the Louvre via the Tuileries tunnel which is the most visited by foreign runners.

On the cycling side, the surroundings of Lake Annecy are favored by cyclists on the go, since the Puya Climb path in the town of Sévrier (Rhône-Alpes) is the most popular.

#7 Work is the main obstacle to physical activity

According to Strava’s annual report, work is cited as the main obstacle to physical activity.

Thus, more than two thirds of athletes around the world say they have regularly given up a sports session due to their professional obligations.

A figure which rises to 74% in France.

The feeling of insecurity also appears to be a significant barrier to physical activity.

Note, however, that this obstacle concerns twice as many women as men.
