In response to the above call, Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Galant said Israel was preparing emergency aid to Turkey.

“The security forces are ready to provide any help. The Israeli security system has many years of experience in dealing with disasters and in saving lives,” said Mr. Galant.

In a separate statement, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen expressed “deep grief” for the Turkish people.

“On behalf of the State of Israel, I would like to express my deep sorrow to the Turkish people for the serious earthquake that has just occurred,” the Israeli foreign minister said.

The quake had a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale and was one of the strongest earthquakes in Turkey in more than 100 years.

The Turkish vice president said more than 1,700 buildings in 10 Turkish cities had been damaged.
