7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Central Japan: Tsunami Warnings and Evacuations Issued

An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 occurred on the coast of central Japan, Kyodo News reports. According to the Japanese national scale, the earthquake was assessed at a maximum of 7 points.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in Ishikawa Prefecture on the island of Honshu. Tremors were felt in Tokyo.

Following the earthquake and a series of aftershocks, the prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama and Yamagata issued a tsunami warning. The country’s meteorological agency warned of waves up to five meters high. Some areas have already been hit by a tsunami with a wave height of 1.2 meters. NHK reported that waves up to 5 meters high reached the Noto Peninsula.

Japanese authorities have begun evacuating residents from the coastal areas of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama prefectures. No deaths or injuries were reported.

After the earthquake, Ishikawa authorities reported that houses had collapsed in some areas of the prefecture. About 32,500 homes were left without electricity. East Japan Railway said that high-speed train services on the Tohoku, Joetsu and Hokuriku lines have been suspended. At nuclear power plants located along the Sea of ​​Japan, no violations were detected after the earthquake.

Tsunami threat also was announced in Vladivostok and Nakhodka. The Ministry of Emergency Situations for Sakhalin also announced the threat of a tsunami, but soon this message turned out to be unavailable on the department’s website. The ministry told RBC that the warning system was not launched, no evacuation is being carried out, and there is no threat to the population. At Nakhodka City Hall later statedthat the tsunami wave in the city passed almost unnoticed.
